A {Happy Birthday, Dad} Card...

Sunday, November 20, 2011

I used to never get crafty on the weekends (unless we have a girls craft night) but I've been finding myself needing last minute cards for the past three weekends.  Yesterday we celebrated my father-in-laws birthday and I only had girly looking cards in my stash.  That called for a special card to be made.  I quickly browsed my pinterest boards for a quick and easy card before I headed down to my studio.  I based my card off of this really cool card by Laura Bassen
This card would have been really fast and easy to make, except I had a caffeine buzz going and it was really hard to line up the alphabet stamps that spell "DAD" with an unsteady hand.  But I can't complain because I didn't have to make the coffee.

Have a great day!

A {Happy 6th Birthday} Card for Colin & Cake Pops...

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

If my son ever doubts my love for him, I will remind him (and show him these photos) of the day Mommy made him clown cake pops.  I enjoy baking and am a fan of Bakerella.  Everyone loved the cake pops I made a couple years ago, which tasted a lot better than they looked.  I checked out this book at the library a few weeks ago and once Colin chose these clowns, there was no changing his mind.

They turned out pretty cute, definitely home-made looking.  They required a lot of time, patience and candy (which we have a lot leftover that I'm trying not to eat).  I took a lot of liberties with these.  I was not about to buy 48 sugar cones, cut off the tips for the birthday hats and throw the rest away ('cause what can you do with a bunch of cone pieces?).  Also, the fuzzy hair was supposed to be French Burnt Peanut Candies, which I couldn't find at the two stores I checked.  I ended up using some raspberry gummies that had bumps that resembled hair, although I had to trim all of them down.  For the eyebrows I used some green holly sprinkles that I found all the way in the back of the cabinet.

The book suggested making different versions of the clowns (some with collars, without collars, different kinds of smiles, etc.)  I opted not to do this since Colin will be sharing them with his class and I wanted to avoid the "why does hers have more candy?" thing.  Apparently the author doesn't have children.  So, luckily my kids had a snow day yesterday and I was able to dedicate about three hours to making these (not including the hour I spent the day prior baking the cake, mixing the cake with icing and then rolling them into balls).
When I told people that I was making these cake pops, all of them said the same thing.  They had either tried it themselves or knew someone who had and they all had the problem of the cake ball falling off the stick. After I had the balls rolled, I refrigerated them overnight.  I dipped the end of the stick in chocolate before sticking it in the balls.  Then (thanks to recommendations from friends), I stuck them in the freezer for about an hour before I dipped them in the white candy coating.  This worked like a charm (just make sure your balls don't freeze).  Out of the 48 cake pops only one fell off the stick.  Once the cake pop is dipped you have to work quickly to stick on all the candy.  The white candy coating dries really quickly.  There were a few times where I needed to apply a little more white coating to certain areas with a toothpick and then stick on the candy.

So, will I make these again?  Yes, because my little girl is already asking me to make them for her birthday.  I probably won't enjoy it, but I will make them again.  Hopefully she'll pick a less tedious cake pop.  Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the kids had another snow day today, so Colin will be taking these cake pops in whenever they go back to school.  So glad I rushed to get them all done!
So, onto the card I made for Colin's birthday.  I'm sorta impressed with myself over this one.  There's a lot of stuff on this card and that IS NOT my usual style. It is very Silhouette heavy, but I wanted something really special for my special guy.  Pretty much everything was cut using the Silhouette except the rectangles.  It took me quite a while to do the banner, getting them all spaced out and centered without being able to glue the string down.
Lots of dimension to this card.  The banner flags, number 6, sentiment blocks, and white panel are all popped up on foam adhesive.  BTW, this sketch used today's sketch challenge at SCS.

Wow, this was a really long post.  I'm giggling to myself re-reading this at all the innuendos with the word ball and balls.  Tee hee hee, I'm a perpetual 12 year old boy.

Have a great day!

OCC Challenge - Thank You Recipe

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Happy New Year everyone!!!  I'm excited to share the first Our Creative Corner challenge of the new year with you. We have a lot of exciting things in store for you this year.  The first thing is there is a Design Team call.  You can find more details about that on Our Creative Corner.  Okay, for this weeks blog we have a recipe for you.  Make a "thank you" card/project using cream and blue, also include elements of metal and vellum.

I received a Silhouette SD for Christmas (which is so amazing I'm gonna write a separate post about it soon) and created a few elements for my card using it.  The blue shape and the leaves were digitally cut as well as the vellum flowers.  The flowers were cut as a spiral circle that you rolled into these flowers.  Very cool.
Obviously this card will not be one that I'll be putting in an envelope and mailing!

Make sure you check out the rest of the inspiration for this week's challenge at Our Creative Corner.

Have a great day!

Paper Maniac Thursday - Hello!

Thursday, December 23, 2010

Hey guys!  This will be my final post for Paper Maniac.  I've had a very fun year and a half working with Patti and the girls at Paper Maniac.  It is truly a great store with lots and lots of amazing products.  What sets them apart from other online stores is their wonderful customer service and quick shipping to your door. Oh, and their prices and sales are awesome!  I have really enjoyed my time with Paper Maniac and will continue to support them in the future.

Now onto my card.  We have had so much snow where I live, I really wanted to make a happy and cherry card without any snowflakes or other winter elements.  So, I picked up one of my favorite collections, Hippy Girl by Kaiser Craft.  I cut 1.25" squares from my scraps to form the quilt-like base.  The floral die cut in the middle even came with the collection.  For the butterfly I used a Martha Stewart punch and punched it from another die that came with the collection.
I added a little sponging around the edges.  The sentiment "hello" is from the clear stamp set Essential Messages from Hero Arts and is popped up on foam dimensionals.

Thanks so much taking the time out of your busy schedules to stop by for a visit.  Have a great day!!!

A {Happy Birthday} Card...

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Hey guys!  Today I have a card to share that uses this week's CPS Sketch.  Once again I used some Offbeat paper from  Basic Grey.  I am not too crazy about this paper, but the more I use it I've been noticing that I like the sheets individually, but not all together.  On today's card I used one pattern for the background and just a little scrap for the small heart.  I think this works since it's mixed with a bunch of solids.  Not so overwhelming to the eye.
I added some faux stitching and a red rhinestone as a finishing touch.  I hope you've enjoyed today's card.  Have a great day!

OCC Challenge - Sketch Challenge

Saturday, December 11, 2010

Hello!  I'm here with a fun sketch challenge from Our Creative Corner.  I seriously think sketch challenges are my favorite.  It's so easy to make a card when you don't have to decide on a layout.  I am really digging the color combo on my card.  Blues, browns, and a lime-y green have such a calming feel.

The background text is stamped using Versamark.  I love the pops of green and I tried to use the "rule of threes" by having those pops of green on three place on my card.  I think it looks balanced, what do you think?
I hope you'll check out all the other awesome creations over at Our Creative Corner.  If you're getting crafty this week, I hope you'll join our challenge.

Have a great rest of your weekend!!!

Paper Maniac Thursday - Echo Park

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Hello!  This week the Paper Maniac DT and I are focusing on Echo Park.  Echo Park offers collections of 12 x 12 patterned papers.  I haven't seen a collection that I haven't adored.  Today I chose to use the Life is Good collection. The little house is cut out from a sheet of image panels.  The swirl is a sticker that comes with the collection as well.  I only used part of the sticker and cut it off at the edges with scissors.

For my sentiment, I cut a slit in the house panel and punched a hole at the top and bottom.  Then I slid a thin piece of patterned paper through the slit and adhered that paper to the back of the house panel.  This card is also for this week's Sketch Challenge at SCS.

Have a great day!

Paper Maniac Thursday - Northwoods Stamps

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Hello!  It's Paper Maniac Thursday!!!  This week the design team and I are showing off Northwoods Stamps.  You can find the stamp I used on my card here.

The leaf background goes perfectly with these colorful butterflies.  The leaves are glittery.  The leaf paper, the blue sentiment paper, as well as the pink paper behind the butterfly all come from Hippy Girl by Kaiser Craft.  As soon as I saw this stamp, I immediately knew I wanted to cut around the wings and make it 3D.  I was able to do that by using a craft knife.  I took a small square of pink patterned paper and applied it behind the butterfly for some added interest.
The butterfly centers have matching rhinestones so they coordinate well with the glittery paper.

Northwoods Stamps are marked down 25% this week at Paper Maniac.  Check them out!

Have a great day!

Paper Maniac Thursday - Back to School

Thursday, August 26, 2010

It's Paper Maniac Thursday and this week's theme is Back to School.  Since my kiddos went back to school a week and a half ago I decided to make a Thank You card fit for a teacher.  I know there will be many occasions throughout the year where a Thank You card will be needed.

My card is a 4.25" square.  I chose to use some apple patterned paper from the "Apple Cider" Paper Pad by imaginisce.  The green swirly paper is also from that pad.  I also used some paper from the Basic Grey "Basics Manila" paper pad.  There are a few pages that look like notebook paper.  I used one of those pieces for the sentiment and then I cut out the brown notebook page from a different sheet.

I hope you enjoyed my card for today!  Have a great day!!!

Paper Maniac Thursday - Pile it on!

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Hello!  It's Thursday and around here that means a card featuring Paper Maniac.  This week the design team was challenged to make a card that piled on the layers (at least 4).  As soon as I saw the sketch challenge from SCS, I knew it would be a perfect fit.  I started out with a kraft card base and then all of the other papers are from the Nook & Pantry collection from Basic Grey.  When I am making a card with so many layers I always use a collection since I know all the papers coordinate.

The cupcake is cut out from a sheet of cupcakes and is popped up on foam dimensionals.  I added the pearls to the scalloped edge and distressed the floral layer to give the card a sort of shabby chic feel.
Thanks so much for visiting today.  Have a wonderful day!!!

PS.  Paper Maniac just marked down the entire Nook & Pantry Collection (as well as other BG papers)!!!

Happy Birthday, Queenbee...

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

Hello!  Today is my Grandma's 80th birthday and I made this card to give her at her party on Sunday.  Pretty much my entire family refers to her as Queenbee, so this stamp set is so appropriate for her birthday card.  There is a lot of bling on this card, a little too much for my liking, but I know that's what Grandma is going to like the best.  She is one classy lady that loves jewelery.
The layout comes from this week's Mojo Monday Sketch.  I tried out some new ink on this card.  I purchased a Colorbox chalk ink stacking tower (Cat's Eyes) in primary.  So far I really like them.  I really like the coverage on solid stamps.  Since half of my SU stampin' spots are retired I thought this may be a good switch.
This bee was stamped twice, once on the distressed yellow paper, cutting out the body of the bee.  Then I stamped the bee again on white.  I adhered the yellow body on top of the image stamped on the white.
I even decorated the inside of the card.  I stamped the same flowers but used a white gel pen to fill in the flower centers instead of rhinestones so the card would close flat.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!!!

Best Wishes...

Monday, June 14, 2010

Hey there!  I was such a procrastinator this morning!  I was dreading going down to the studio since it's been a few days.  I was worried my mojo might have disappeared.  Once I finally sat down at my desk, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of making this card.  I used this week's CPS sketch for my inspiration.  Initially the card didn't have the ribbon or the brown panel.  I almost scrapped it and start from scratch.   Thankfully I kept playing around until I got it just right.

The floral and brown panels are from Indian Summer by Basic Grey.  The floral paper is sort of like the black sheep of the pack.  It really doesn't coordinate with any of the other papers.  I love it though, and was glad I was finally able to use it.
Every edge of my card is sponged with Tea Dye Distress Ink from Ranger.

I want to thank you all for the great response I received from my introductory Frugal Friday post.  You guys are the best and I can't wait until this Friday.  Thanks so much for your support!!!
